| Background Information | Adipocytes secrete a number of hormones called adipokines with functions that include appetite and energy balance and insulin sensitivity. One of these, adiponectin, is involved in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism, influencing the body’s response to insulin. Also, its anti-inflammatory effects on the cellular lining of blood vessel walls may help to explain the association of high adiponectin levels with a reduced risk of heart attack.
