| Background Information | Skeletal muscle is actively involved in the synthesis and secretion of many proteins collectively termed “myokines.” Muscle contraction during physical activity is an important activator for the release of myokines, which act in an autocrine and/or paracrine manner to regulate skeletal muscle growth. Myokines also act as endocrine hormones which mediate inter-organ crosstalk. Myokine theory provides molecular mechanistic explanations for exercise-induced metabolic changes in liver and adipose tissue as well as for profound changes in immune and neuron systems. Various genetically engineered mouse strains and disease models are now serving as exceptional research tools for human myokine study. |

| Application Notes | • This assay uses 25 µL of a 1:1 dilution of serum or plasma per well, or 25 µl neat or appropriately diluted tissue culture supernatant per well. • For optimal sensitivity, use an overnight (16-18 hour) incubation. A two hour incubation can also be used (though sensitivity may be lower). |
